It's Showtime at the Peking Opera

78" x 60"

Painted silks and cottons.  Machine appliquéd and quilted, beading and thread work.

$12,500

This hanging is the result of a photograph I took of a "show girl" while attending the Peking Theatre in Beijing, China (formerly Peking).  She and several others paraded the stage between acts of the children's play, The Monkey Kings.  The two Monkey Kings are depicted in the upper corners of the hanging.  The Peking Opera company has performed without interruption since 1750.

Marti Gras Cats

47" x 38"

Commercial fabric, fused and heavily quilted.

$3,000

This hanging is a tribute to a family cat that ran out of his nine lives.  He was a black and white cat who had many colorful adventures.  Starting in the upper left corner and working clockwise, observe some of these adventures:

A.      He is reveling in all his feathers and finery at the Marti Gras Parade.

B.      After being Shanghaied aboard a ship while in China, he is put to work keeping the rats and mice off the ship.  He dresses in his pirate outfit, including a peg leg, and stomps around the ship.  Not a single rat or mouse can be found.  They jumped ship in fear for their lives.

C.      Before jumping ship, he amuses the crew and Captain with his flamboyant rendition of "Hello, Dolly."  Notice his beautiful beads and feathers.

D.      After jumping ship, he finds work in an aviary.  His job is to keep the mice and rats out of the aviary and keep the birds entertained.  The birds love him so much that they land on his head while he performs his latest jazz rendition.

E.      Next, he finds that, because of all his good deeds, he has been selected as "King" of the Marti Gras Parade.

F.      He then decides to go to work for a fish monger.  Each morning he wears a fresh catch of fish for a hat and necklace.  His job is to parade up and down in front of the fish market.  He attracts all of the local cats in the area and leads them down a side alley,  (this way the cats will not bother the customers).  In the alley they are all caught in a trap until the end of market day.  As they are allowed to leave the trap, the monger lets them have all the fish left in the market.
